The Dive of James Cameron
The Dive, a film directed by James Cameron, is still on hold. The movie, in pre-production for several years, would relate the life of Francisco Ferreras and Audrey Mestre, a couple of record-setting freedivers.
The story is based on real events. In 1996, Mestre, a French woman, met Ferreras, a Cuban passionate about freediving. They fell in love and married in 1999.
After both had accumulated several world records, Mestre decided on October 2, 2002, to break the no-limits world record. Unfortunately, after reaching a depth of 171 meters, she had problems with her large inflatable balloon which was supposed to lead her to the water surface. Her dive took seven minutes longer than expected and due to the lack of air, Mestre died attempting to beat her own record.
A year later, Ferreras decided to freedive again to match the 171 meters depth in memory of his wife.
The Dive should go into production sometime this year. However, the project could be further delayed as James Cameron is expected to undertake the production of Avatar II in the very near future.
